Message: The Bible - See how God saves people
People often say, 'Why should I believe in Bible miracles if I can't see them?'
It's a fair question. But it's worth pondering whether or not you'd actually want to be there when they took place. Would you really want to, for example, be with the huge Israelite nation fleeing Egypt in the hot desert chased by the most powerful army in the known world at the time? The Egyptian army's chariots were killing machines and their cavalry fast and expert. The Bible tells us the Israelites were terrified. Would you really want to be with them as they walked through those parted waters of the Red Sea, huge walls of water buttressed on either side by a majestic act of God? Would you really want to witness this great sign and wonder from the front row? Which would you fear more, the water closing in on you or that terrible army at your heels? The Bible records that the Israelites were so terrified that they pleaded with Moses to go back to Egypt where they'd been slaves. Oppressed, persecuted, slaves with a Pharaoh who liked to kill their children. Probably most people would prefer to sit that miracle out.
The Bible records that after the Israelites came through safely, the parted waters closed in on Pharaoh's crack troops and his army was wiped out. Later Moses warned the Israelites that they shouldn't forget what they'd seen but pass on to their children and their children's children all that they'd seen. History is like that. Great events passed down from generation to generation.
The story of the Exodus from Egypt was the story of God saving the people he loved. Years later the greatest saving act of God of all time was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Golgotha almost 2,000 years ago. Once again, being there was risky. A man called Simon was forced by the Romans to carry Jesus's cross from Jerusalem to the place of execution. If you'd been there they might have grabbed you instead! But perhaps the greatest irony for those wanting to witness miracles is that this time the miracle wasn't that obvious. It wasn't like the parting of the Red Sea. You had to know what you were looking at. Many who watched Jesus die on the cross sneered and scoffed saying 'He saved others ... he cannot save himself'. Yet those who knew what was happening said this, "we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world."
Prayer:Dear God, thank you for recording your saving works in the Bible. Please let me have eyes to see and ears to hear what you have done through Jesus.
Verse:And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. 1John 4:14
