Message: Regifted for over 2000 years
Is there anything honourable about your re-gifted Christmas present?
The brute fact is that you spent hardly any effort matching those special qualities or considering the needs and wants of your supposed 'friend' or 'dear relative'. You also expended no time in locating the gift or travelling to obtain it. Put simply, you didn't find it or fund it. And frankly, it's bordering on fraud.
Which is why the re-gift is often a furtive act and part of the squalid underbelly of Christmas. Oh I'm sure you justify it to yourself with your pitch about recycling. But no one is really fooled. You wanted a Chewbacca dashboard bobblehead but got Jabba the Hutt. And because Jabba has no neck and won't jiggle you re-gifted.
But dear friend there is one guilt-free, purpose designed re-giftable item. He is the person of Jesus Christ. Re-gifting Jesus has no moral complexity. There are no regrets. In every sense, Jesus is for re-gifting.
Do you remember the angel visiting the shepherds out in the field that night?
... the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."
Jesus's arrival was good news for 'all the people'. Which meant people would need to tell others and they, in turn, would need to tell still more people. And so on and so on up to the present. In fact, this 're-gifting' is how every person on earth down through the ages has heard about Jesus.
It's almost certainly true that Jesus is the most re-gifted present in history. When people hear about him and accept Him in their lives they almost always end up giving him away. That is, they tell other people about him.
So why is Jesus such good news? Because he came to save people from sin! Sin is rebellion against God and the Bible tells us that,
.... the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
It's why Christmas is such a wonderful time of joy and relief. So celebrate with joy the wonderful, supremely re-giftable person of Jesus Christ this Christmas.
Prayer: : Dear God thank you that others have shared the gift of Jesus with me. Help me treasure this great gift in my life.
Bible verse: And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.(Luke 2:10-11)
